Things to do

Lochaber is a great holiday destination. Acharacle lies at the " knot " right in the centre of an area of unique charm and variety. Within 45 miles the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis, towers above Fort William. The Caledonian canal, linking east with west by way of Loch Ness passes close below the famous Commando memorial at Spean Bridge, before descending "Neptune's staircase" to the sea.

Come west on the 'Road to the Isles', towards Mallaig and  Glenfinnan, where the clans gathered to support Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 rebellion, and the famous " Harry Potter Bridge" is on the route.

Onwards beyond Arisaig, a whole western seascape opens up to reveal the islands of Skye and the inner Hebrides. But... slow down ! Only the turning south, at Lochailort, will bring you here. To this hidden land of lochs and mountains, ancient woodlands, castles and crofts.

Information...

Local guidebooks to the area are distributed widely. Some can lead you on quiet rambles to historic places, while for the adventurous testing hill walks and climbs are also outlined. Aided by the ordnance survey Explorer map ( 390 ) covering Loch Shiel / Loch Sunart, artists, bird watchers botanists, geologists, and ecologists can easily identify local areas of special interest. Cyclists can follow the ancient by-ways, and boat enthusiasts pick their landing spots. If you bring your own boat the sea can be your 'highway'. You can explore near or far in sheltered sea lochs, or round the fringes of the open sea. Boats are available locally for day and Fishing trips. At Duneira we now have Mountain bikes available for daily hire.

For off road cycling you will find a downloadable map and cycle routes on

http://www.sunartoakwoods.org.uk/getactive/cycleroutes.htm

There is also a walks booklet available which contains 30 walks from easy to strenuous.

Venture the length of Ardnamurchan along the tortuous single track road, and you will reach the most westerly point on the British mainland, where endless swells pound some of the world's most ancient rocks. Take the small ferry at Kilchoan across the Sound of Mull to Tobermory.... ( pre-school tv fans will know why ! ) Perhaps join an organised boat trip to watch whales off the peninsular ( in season) . Call in at the famous Educational Wildlife Centre near Glenborrodale....hire a boat at Laga Bay to explore Loch Sunart... or go fishing either sea angling or there are several lochs with brown trout . Accompany a wildlife Warden through the renowned Sunart Oak woodlands...or just relax, join in the regular folk evenings in local restaurants and bars, and blend with the landscape.....

The Choice is yours....
